Is mulching paper essential for a chili crop?
Share
Most new chili varieties/hybrids are developed for a longer duration. In such cases, farmers need to protect crops from various stresses like drought, pests for a longer duration. The use of plastic mulch is important.
Most important advantage mulching paper gives is that it prevents soil erosion. As beds are covered with paper, rain water does not enter the root zone. Hence loss of fertilizer is prevented. Due to mulching, the rise in the sucking pests population is prevented to great extent. As we know, viruses are a big problem in chili, mulching paper also aids in preventing virus spread through suppression of sucking pests, which are carriers of viruses.
Through studies we are now aware that mulching paper has the potential to raise yield qualitatively and quantitatively. Profits can rise between 25-80%.
Use of 25 micron LDPE mulch is highly recommended. As this is a vegetable crop, farmers need to cover almost 80% of this cultivation area and hence expenses for mulching paper could be between 6500 to 10,000 per acre.
If you are considering the use of much, bed preparation basal dose and drip lateral arrangement should be given additional cognizance.
